For those of you that didn’t know, today (April 18th) marks the beginning of National Volunteer Week! This week-long celebration of volunteerism was established in 1974, and it has grown a great deal since its inception several decades ago. National Volunteer Week is a time for individuals to come together and inspire one another to do what they can to create positive change in their communities. This year’s theme is Celebrating People in Action.

Sponsored by the Points of Light Institute and the HandsOn Network, National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It is during this week that individuals across the country will recognize the one-year anniversary of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

If you’ve never volunteered (or not as much as you’d like), take this time to check out some of the great resources available to help you find ways to help others!

Create the Good

Create the Good has over 26,398 volunteer opportunities (and counting)! They’ve got everything from helping animals to helping the environment, and the site even has “DIY” (Do-It-Yourself) for those of you who’d like to organize your own project. The Create the Good widget is on the main page for Service365. All you’ve got to do is enter your zip code!

Idealist.org

Also known as “Action Without Borders,” Idealist has a multitude of resources for anyone who’s interested in the non-profit world. Perhaps you’d like to change your career path to something more fulfilling, or maybe you’d like to start your own non-profit? Idealist.org has everything you need to begin your journey of service.

CoolPeopleCare.org

As National Volunteer Week gets underway, I’m excited for all the change that will take place during this week. It will be a time to serve, reflect, and think about creative ways to improve society. Equipped with an endless amount of energy, a desire to serve others and a somewhat crazy idea, completing 365 consecutive days of service is something many people do everyday.

Having worked with a number of non-profit organizations, I’ve seen how much they struggle to get volunteers (and donations). It is my hope that through Service365, people will become more aware of the needs of others and take an active role in changing the status quo. Throughout my journey I’ll be updating my Facebook status, tweeting, taking photographs, and serving those who need it most.

I hope that people understand the true value of community service because it’s created a huge impact on my life.
